We are living in exciting times. Last century, it was revealed that everything in the Universe is made of vibrating energy, including the stars, the mountains, the sky, your dog, the chair you are sitting on, yourself and most importantly your thoughts and feelings. This sparked a mini revolution in the fields of science, medicine and psychology – forward-thinking psychologists looked for ways to incorporate this new discovery into their treatment sessions.

The first psychologist to have a significant breakthrough was Dr Roger Callahan. Callahan had been studying the acupuncture meridians of the body. He knew that in TCM [Traditional Chinese Medicine] physical pain was lessened -and sometimes eliminated- by unblocking specific energy points in the body. He wondered if it was possible to find a connection between energy points in the body and emotional pain.

Callahan’s breakthrough and astonishing success came about after linking a client’s chronic water phobia to a specific energy point in her body. Callahan’s phenomenal success using ‘energy’ to  treat his client’s chronic water phobia was the inspiration for a new branch of psychology – ‘Energy Psychology’.

Over time, Callahan realised that different emotional problems required tapping on a variety of energy points using various tapping sequences. He called the diverse tapping algorithms he created to treat multiple emotional problems, ‘Thought Field Therapy [TFT].

One of Callahan’s first students was Harvard-trained  engineer Gary Craig. Craig was impressed with TFT but believed the many algorithms Callahan used were overly complicated. Craig ‘engineered’ TFT’s many algorithms into one single algorithm, which he called  ‘Emotional Freedom Techniques’ [EFT]. EFT soon surpassed TFT as the more popular emotional release technique.

Around the same time, other psychologists had been working on their own ways of releasing ‘trapped emotional energy’ and in the 1980s and 90s, several new energy psychology techniques emerged with their own unique ways of releasing ‘trapped emotional energy’.

I became a practitioner of EFT and other energy psychology techniques in the early 2000s but gravitated more towards EFT. At one point, EFT was headline news – newspapers around the world reported excitedly about peoples’ ‘instant cures’ for their emotional problems after using EFT. But soon, the same newspapers began calling EFT  a ‘snake oil’ treatment after reports that the ‘instant cures’ were short-lived.

As a practitioner, I realised there was truth in both these statements -people do have ‘instant cures’ with EFT, but they are extremely rare. Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions about EFT – ‘guaranteed instant cures’ is one. Another is that EFT is simple. While the tapping points are simple to learn, achieving lasting results with EFT requires skill and often great perseverance. Skilled practitioners hone their skills over years of study and practise, so it is unrealistic to expect similar results from non-practitioners.

After studying the workings of the subconscious mind, I realised that for my EFT clients to achieve lasting results, unless they had an ‘instant cure, the most effective way for them to ensure the feelings didn’t come back was to rewrite the disempowering subconscious programs which are responsible for 95% of our disempowering thoughts and feelings. Regular reinforcement is key to rewriting our subconscious programming.

I knew that using EFT regularly was an excellent way to rewrite the disempowering programmes in our subconscious mind, but the catch-22 situation was that people complained they didn’t get the same results when they used the techniques on their own. Try as I might to encourage my EFT clients to use the techniques regularly enough to rewrite their subconscious programs, I knew it was unrealistic.

For years, I wished I could come up with a way to help my clients rewrite their subconscious programming…easily. Then, one day when I was thinking about something completely different, I had an aha moment that gave me an insight into releasing trapped emotional energy in a way that would not only be easy and effective, I believed there would be zero resistance to using the technique regularly at home. I soon found myself at the start of an exciting journey which culminated -six years later- with the launch of the emotional transformation technique I called ‘Hypno-Sensing’.
